Wildlife at Mingarry Lodges, Ardnamurchan and Beyond
Lochaber supports a rich and varied fauna and flora and affords some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities in Scotland. Moidart, Morvern, Sunart and the Ardnamurchan peninsula (often collectively referred to as the Ardnamurchan region) provide a diversity of freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats, supporting species of national and international importance, including many of the iconic species of the Highlands. In addition, there are eight special areas of conservation nearby encompassing woodland, bog and mire, freshwater and marine habitats.
Not only does Lochaber afford ample opportunity to tick off Scotland’s Big 5 (red squirrel, otter, golden eagle, red deer and harbour seal), Lochaber also support many of the butterflies, moths and dragonflies characteristic of the Highlands.
At Mingarry Lodges we take wildlife seriously. The grounds and the surrounding woods afford some great opportunities to encounter some of the native wildlife of Moidart and Ardnamurchan. In addition, the site is actively managed for wildlife; we have several bird nest boxes on site that are regularly used by blue tits and great tits, as well as bat boxes located in the woods behind the cabin.
We offer our guests the opportunity to explore nature first hand. Why not be a bat detective and use our bat detectors to seek out and monitor the bat fauna in the grounds. You can also set up camera-traps in the woodlands to discover the creatures of the night, including bank voles, wood mice and pine martens, and if you are lucky, you may even capture the elusive wild cat. There are also ample opportunities to photograph, paint or sketch wildlife up close, whether you are interested in red squirrels, pine martens, woodland birds or native butterflies and day-flying moths.
The enclosed grounds are ideal for young wildlife explorers. Children can look out for slow worms (legless lizards), vivaprpous lizards, common toad, common frog and palmate newt in the grounds, as well as a host of mini-beasts in the woodlands.
We can also advise you on the best places to see other wildlife locally and further afield, including otters, golden eagles and white-tailed eagles so you can get the most out of your wildlife holiday.
These are just a few of the reasons to make time for a holiday in Moidart and the Ardnamurchan. Mingarry Lodges provides a great base to see some of the distinctive and iconic flora and fauna of the Highlands, as well as supporting a diversity of wildlife on site, including red squirrels, pine marten and an abundance of woodland birds.
A truly amazing place to discover, observe and photograph wildlife up close from Hooting or Tooting Lodge.
Mingarry Lodges is ideal accommodation for the nature lovers, with many woodland species present in abundance. It is a great place to engage with nature; ideal for both the young wildlife explorer and more mature nature enthusiast.
